JOB DESCRIPTION - ASSISTANT CONTROLLER

Summary of Job Responsibilities:

Responsible for maintaining complete and accurate project financial records. Monitors Department policies and procedures and recommends improvements, consults with the Controller & CFO, serves as a resource in all aspects of accounting. Ensures accurate internal and external recording and reporting of financial transactions. Ensures that accounting activities are in accordance with established legal, and Company procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Assumes responsibility for the effective preparation, maintenance, and reporting of internal and external financial records and analyses.
  • Distributes monthly cost reports to project management. Reviews, analyzes and reports status of project profitability, areas of financial concern and other comparative examinations as appropriate.
  • Prepares/Reviews monthly owner pay applications and relays inconsistencies with project manager reporting to controller and project management.
  • Monitors syncronization of project records between project management software (Procore) and accounting software (Viewpoint Vists) to ensure accurate and complete records in both systems.
  • Works in conjunction with estimating department and project management team to set up project budgets.
  • Responsible for reporting project fee and other pertinent financial data.
  • Assists with project cost reporting for the annual audit and project cost certification audits. Ensures that accounting records and reports are in compliance with GAAP.
  • Assists AP personnel with proper coding of project related invoice.
  • Assists with reviewing/resolving subcontractor payment issues, owner pay application questions and other day to day problems as they arise. 
  • Assists Controller & CFO with overseeing daily operations and performing administrative functions for the Accounting department.
  • Helps to ensure effective financial internal controls for the Company. Continually evaluates established policies and procedures, and recommends updates/modifications as necessary.
  • Assists CFO and Controller with analyzing subcontractor financial statements for prequalification rating.
  • Attends and participates in meetings and committees as appropriate.
  • Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.
  • Ensures that work area is clean, secure, and well maintained.
  • Stays informed of trends and changes in the accounting and finance fields.
  • Completes special accounting projects as assigned.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or a related field; CPA/CPA track a plus.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:
Thorough knowledge of financial and accounting practices and procedures. Understanding of construction industry accounting.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • One to three years of high-level accounting experience.
  • Viewpoint Accounting Software Procore Project Management Software
  • Must be Fluent in Microsoft Excel

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Excellent leadership and human relations abilities.
  • Able to organize, coordinate, and direct projects.
  • Strong oral and written communication abilities.
  • Solid analytical and technical skills. 

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS
  • Project level financial reporting is accurate and timely. Controller & CFO are provided with useful and informative reports and data.
  • Owner pay applications are distributed in a timely manner.
  • Good coordination and effective working relations exist with other departments.
  • Assistance is provided as needed.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common business terminology, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

REASONING ABILITY
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
