Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and strategic Director of MEP to lead all aspects of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems across [multiple/large-scale] projects [or campus/facility portfolio]. This senior leadership role will oversee the planning, design coordination, procurement, installation, commissioning, and ongoing optimization of MEP systems, ensuring compliance with codes, budgets, schedules, quality standards, and sustainability goals. The ideal candidate is a proven leader with deep technical expertise in MEP engineering, strong team management skills, and a track record of delivering complex building projects on time and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic direction and leadership for all MEP-related activities from conceptual design through construction, commissioning, and handover.
- Oversee the development and implementation of MEP design standards, specifications, and best practices.
- Lead and manage MEP engineering teams, including hiring, mentoring, performance management, and professional development of engineers, designers, and coordinators.
- Coordinate closely with architects, structural engineers, general contractors, subcontractors, owners, and other stakeholders to integrate MEP systems effectively into overall project delivery.
- Manage MEP budgets, schedules, value engineering opportunities, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Ensure all MEP systems comply with applicable building codes, standards (ASHRAE, NFPA, NEC, IMC, IPC, etc.), energy codes, LEED/ sustainability requirements, and client specifications.
- Direct the procurement process for MEP equipment and subcontracts, including bid review, vendor/subcontractor selection, and contract administration.
- Oversee construction administration, including shop drawing/submittal review, RFI responses, field inspections, testing, balancing, and commissioning activities.
- Drive quality assurance/quality control for MEP installations and resolve technical issues during design and construction phases.
- Support business development efforts by contributing MEP expertise to proposals, presentations, and client interviews as needed.
- Stay current on emerging technologies, industry trends, and innovations in MEP systems (e.g., smart buildings, energy-efficient HVAC, renewable integration, fire protection).
- Champion safety, sustainability, and continuous improvement initiatives within the MEP discipline.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (Master's preferred).
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required (multi-state preferred); additional certifications (e.g., LEED AP, CxA, CCM) a plus.
- 12+ years of progressive experience in MEP design, engineering, and/or construction management, with at least 5+ years in a senior/leadership role (e.g., MEP Manager, Senior MEP Engineer, or Department Head).
- Proven experience leading MEP efforts on large-scale/complex projects (e.g., commercial, healthcare, institutional, industrial, high-rise, mission-critical facilities).
- Strong knowledge of HVAC, electrical power distribution, lighting, fire alarm/protection, plumbing, low-voltage systems, building automation/controls, and energy modeling.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
- Proficiency with industry-standard software (e.g., Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, HAP, Trace 700, Bluebeam, Microsoft Project/Office).
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining high standards of quality and client satisfaction.
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Experience in [specific sectors if known, e.g., healthcare, data centers, higher education, hospitality, or commercial real estate].
- Track record of delivering projects under aggressive schedules and tight budgets.
- Familiarity with BIM coordination and clash detection processes.
