Horticulturist


We are seeking a knowledgeable and passionate Horticulturist. In this role, you will be responsible for managing and maintaining plant life in various settings, including gardens, parks, and private landscapes. Your expertise will ensure the health, growth, and aesthetic beauty of the plants while promoting sustainable gardening practices. Key Responsibilities:

  • Plant Care & Maintenance: Manage the daily care and maintenance of plants, trees, and shrubs, including watering, pruning, fertilizing, and pest control to ensure optimal health and growth.
  • Garden Design & Planning: Assist in the design and layout of plantings for gardens, public spaces, or client projects, choosing appropriate plants for specific environments, climates, and aesthetic goals.
  • Soil Management: Monitor and improve soil health through the application of compost, mulch, fertilizers, and other soil conditioners. Conduct soil testing to ensure proper pH levels and nutrient content.
  • Plant Selection & Propagation: Select plants for various projects, considering factors such as climate, soil type, and aesthetic value. Propagate new plants through seeds, cuttings, or grafting techniques.
  • Pest & Disease Control: Identify and manage plant diseases, pests, and other environmental stressors through integrated pest management (IPM) practices, ensuring that solutions are both effective and environmentally responsible.
  • Sustainability Initiatives: Implement sustainable practices, such as water conservation, organic gardening, and habitat creation, to maintain healthy ecosystems and reduce environmental impact.
  • Education & Consultation: Provide guidance to clients, colleagues, and the public on plant care, gardening techniques, and environmental best practices. Organize and lead educational workshops or demonstrations as needed.
  • Record-Keeping: Maintain detailed records of plant care, including planting schedules, growth patterns, pest treatments, and overall plant health.
  • Seasonal Transitions: Plan and execute seasonal plantings, ensuring that gardens and landscapes remain attractive and healthy year-round, adapting to changing climates and environmental conditions.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor s degree in Horticulture, Plant Science, Botany, or a related field (preferred).
  • Experience: At least 2 4 years of hands-on experience in horticulture, landscape maintenance, or a similar role. Experience in garden design or public garden management is a plus.
  • Plant Knowledge: Strong knowledge of plant species, growth cycles, pest management, soil science, and sustainable gardening practices.
  • Technical Skills: Familiarity with horticulture tools, equipment, and machinery, as well as plant identification and soil testing methods. Experience with landscape design software is a bonus.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to diagnose plant health issues, devise treatment plans, and make informed decisions regarding plant care and management.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and lift/move heavy materials (e.g., soil, mulch, pots) as required.
  • Attention to Detail: Keen eye for plant aesthetics and an understanding of how to achieve healthy, visually appealing landscapes.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact with clients and colleagues effectively.
